Parliament on Thursday evening rejected a bill for a tax on the ‘windfall profits’ of banks, after the vote was tied 25-25 in the plenum.
Opposition Akel, who tabled the bill, had framed the issue as ‘Either you’re with the people or you’re with the banks’.
The proposed legislation had sought to impose a 5 per cent ‘solidarity levy’ on commercial banks, with the tax receipts going to support vulnerable
